The Proteas included two new one-day caps in opening batsman Janneman Malan and top-order batsman Kyle Verreynne.

They made five changes from the team that was beaten by 97 runs in the third and final Twenty20 international in Cape Town on Wednesday.

“We’ve got a lot of changes,” said South African captain Quinton de Kock.

“It’s a great time to give some of the youngsters some experience.”

He said he expected the pitch to be good for batting but he expected it to “slow up” later.

“It looks a pretty dry surface,” said Australian captain Aaron Finch.

Play was due to get under way in hot, windy weather with haze in the air from a nearby bushfire which obscured the view of mountains which make the ground one of the most picturesque in South Africa.
