South Australia Cleans Up At National Netball Champs

South Australia has taken a clean sweep in the National Netball Championships after both the 17/U and 19/U South Australian teams claimed victory in their respective gold medal matches against New South Wales.

Six days of netball action at the Queensland State Netball Centre in Brisbane concluded today with eight finals matches across the two age groups.

The 17/U Grand Final was fiercely contested however South Australia kept New South Wales at bay to win 35 to 30 and claim their fourth straight national title.

South Australia’s Georgie Horjus was named MVP of the Grand Final, adding to her already promising career after she was selected as an Adelaide Thunderbirds pathway athlete earlier this year.

In rounding out the 17/U age group, Western Australia claimed the bronze medal after winning their match against Victoria 32 to 21. Queensland then finished 5th with a dominant win over the ACT and the Northern Territory defeated Tasmania to finish 7th and 8th respectively.

The South Australian 19/U team also defeated New South Wales in a strong 49 to 20 win in the Grand Final to claim their first gold medal since 2013 and South Australia’s Tyler Orr was named MVP of the match.

In the 19/U age group, Queensland won bronze after winning over Victoria 43 to 38, Western Australia had a strong victory over the Northern Territory winning 50 to 19 to finish 5th and 6th respectively, and the ACT also dominated the final match 53 to 28 to finish 7th ahead of Tasmania.

South Australia’s Kimberley Hearnden was named MVP of the tournament for the 17/U age group and Macy Gardner from Queensland claimed the 19/U tournament MVP title after both performing consistently well over the six days of play.

Following on from performances at the National Netball Championships, Netball Australia will soon be announcing the 2019 Netball Centre of Excellence 17/U, 19/U and Tall Athlete National Squads.
