Sounders draw with Rapids to equal MLS record

Alex Roldan scored his first career goal as the Seattle Sounders tied a Major League Soccer record with a 1-1 draw against the host Colorado Rapids on Sunday night in Commerce City, Colo.

Seattle remained the lone team without a loss in MLS and equaled the record of 12 straight unbeaten games to start a season in the post-shootout era.

Michael Barrios scored for Colorado.

Roldan’s goal came in the 41st minute. He took a pass on the right wing and tried to beat the Rapids’ Sam Vines to the corner flag, but the defender was able to shield Roldan from the ball and make a pass to teammate Andre Shinyashiki at the top right corner of the 18-yard box. Shinyashiki tried to make a return pass to Vines, but Roldan intercepted the ball and took a 12-yard shot from the right side of the penalty area that snuck under diving Colorado goalkeeper William Yarbrough.

Barrios tied the score in the 58th minute after taking a cross-field pass from Vines on the right edge of the penalty area. Barrios dribbled toward the top right corner of the 6-yard box and unleashed a left-footed shot that deflected off Sounders defender Brad Smith and into the far side netting, leaving goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland no chance.

Barrios nearly gave the Rapids the lead in the 76th minute but his shot went off the right post.

Seattle’s Raul Ruidiaz, who entered the weekend second in the league with nine goals, had a three-match scoring streak come to an end. Ruidiaz had an early chance off a cross from Jimmy Medranda, but Ruidiaz’s header glanced off the crossbar and over the net in the 6th minute.

Cleveland, filling in for the injured Stefan Frei, made two saves for the Sounders.
