Pedro Munhoz out of UFC Fight Night matchup vs. Frankie Edgar after testing positive for COVID-19

Watch Now: Expectations For Debut Of Fight Island (0:50)

Frankie Edgar is in need of a new opponent for his UFC bantamweight debut on Fight Island at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. Pedro Munhoz has tested positive for COVID-19 and is now unable to face Edgar in the co-main event of the UFC Fight Night card on July 15, sources told CBS Sports on Monday. According to ESPN, the UFC is currently seeking a replacement for Edgar in his bantamweight debut.

The UFC has implemented strict coronavirus guidelines for the Fight Island cards that involve multiple tests both before traveling to the event, upon arrival and again prior the the fight. Munhoz joins Gilbert Burns, who was pulled from his planned UFC 251 main event title fight with Kamaru Usman, as fighters who have tested positive during these Fight Island procedures.

Munhoz had a three-fight winning streak snapped in June 2019 when he dropped a unanimous decision to Aljamain Sterling. One fight prior to the loss, Munhoz picked up a first-round knockout win over former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt.

Edgar, who has reportedly signed a new multi-fight deal, is moving to bantamweight in hopes of breathing new life into his career after back-to-back losses and a 1-3 record in his last four trips to the Octagon. Most recently, Edgar was knocked out by Chan Sung Jung in December, just the second stoppage loss of his career.
