Murray/Soares Battle Through, Tsitsipas Brothers Fall At Wimbledon

Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares have reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals twice. Could this be the year they go even further?

The seventh seeds battled past American Nicholas Monroe and Vasek Pospisil 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-1 on Friday to reach the second round at The Championships. They will next play Kazakhstani Andrey Golubev and Dutchman Robin Haase.

The Duchess of Cambridge spent some time alongside Tim Henman watching the British-Brazilian tandem, who converted five of their 10 break points to advance after one hour and 47 minutes.

The top eight seeds in the doubles draw won their first or second-round matches on Friday. Top seeds Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic, who have lifted seven ATP Tour trophies this season, led the way with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Australians Alex de Minaur and Matt Reid to reach the third round.

Other seeded teams to reach the Round of 16 were fourth seeds Marcel Granollers/Horacio Zeballos and eighth seeds Lukasz Kubot/Marcelo Melo. Granollers and Horacio Zeballos clawed past home favourites Ken Skupski and Neal Skupski 6-4, 6-7(5), 10-8 and 2017 Wimbledon champions Kubot and Melo beat Dutchmen Sander Arends and Matwe Middelkoop 6-2, 6-4.

In the first round, two-time Roland Garros champions Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut, the second seeds, ousted Argentine Facundo Bagnis and Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-1, 6-3 and third seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah defeated Yen-Hsun Lu and David Pel 6-2, 6-4.

Fifth seeds Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek as well as sixth seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury also won their matches without losing a set.

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Petros Tsitsipas were unable to move on at SW19. Spaniard Jaume Munar and Briton Cameron Norrie eliminated the singles star and his younger brother 7-5, 7-6(5).

One match went to a Match Tie-break, with Brazilians Rafael Matos and Thiago Monteiro surviving a battle against Kazakhstanis Alexander Bublik and Aleksandr Nedovyesov 6-4, 3-6, 13-12(4). Home favourites Alastair Gray and Aidan McHugh moved on with a 7-6(1), 6-3 victory against Czechs Roman Jebavy and Jiri Vesely.
