Gomes, who has made six senior appearances this season, would be able to leave Old Trafford on a free transfer ahead of the new campaign.

But talks with the England youth international are still ongoing and there is hope at United he can be convinced to stay.

The club have already agreed fresh terms with winger Tahith Chong after he spurned the chance to join Juventus or Inter Milan on a free this summer.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer personally put forward his plan for Chong’s development during negotiations with the player and the Norwegian has also told highly rated Gomes he has the chance to become a regular member of the senior squad.

There is interest in the attacking midfielder from Chelsea and a host of European clubs but United are hopeful that his preference is to extend his stay.

Gomes has made 10 first team appearances since making his debut on the final day of the 2016-17 season as a 16-year-old.

He was part of the England under-17 squad which won the World Cup in 2017 alongside Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho and was named United’s young player of the year in 2017, 12 months after Marcus Rashford collected the same award.
