LeBron James made it clear at All-Star weekend that he hasn’t made a decision on his future beyond this season. If that future includes staying with the Los Angeles Lakers, that’s something the team would welcome.
James is set to be a free agent this offseason. He could return to the Lakers, continue his career elsewhere or retire. If the NBA’s all-time leading scorer does choose to re-sign with Los Angeles, Lakers GM Rob Pelinka is ready for that scenario.
The Lakers didn’t take on any long-term money at the trade deadline. That allows the team to be flexible to be a player in free agency either this offseason or in the summer of 2027, if James re-signs this July.
James is on a $52.6 million expiring contract this season and took a $2.7 million pay cut below the max on his new contract signed in 2024. James’ salary if he re-signs with the Lakers will be a big factor in the type of roster they build out.
