Georgetown leading scorer Mac McClung withdraws from NBA Draft pool, enters transfer portal

Georgetown guard Mac McClung has withdrawn from the 2020 NBA Draft and has entered the transfer portal, ESPN’s Jonathan Givony reported Wednesday. McClung led the Hoyas in scoring and steals amid a tumultuous 2019-20 season filled with several mid-season transfers at Georgetown. The Hoyas finished the season on a seven-game losing streak.

McClung should find there to be a robust market for his services in the transfer portal after a breakout sophomore year in which he improved as a scorer, shooter and decision-maker. He found immense success after starting point guard James Akinjo left midseason to transfer to Arizona. McClung took over as Georgetown’s primary perimeter scorer, averaging 15.7 points for the season and shooting 32.3% from the 3-point line. A foot injury caused him to miss the final 11 games of the season.

Per NCAA rules, McClung must sit one year and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining, but he tells ESPN he will file a waiver and hopes to be eligible immediately in 2020-2021.

McClung’s entry into the transfer portal comes at a time when there appears to have been a disconnect between he and his coach, Patrick Ewing. Two weeks ago, Ewing said in an interview that McClung had withdrawn from the draft and was returning to Georgetown for a junior season. But hours later, McClung’s agent refuted Ewing’s claim, saying McClung had not decided on withdrawing from the draft nor on a potential return to Georgetown.

“The podcast with Andy Katz was not the deciding factor to my decision to transfer,” McClung told ESPN. “I think it affected my pre-draft process, and seemed to confuse a lot of teams.”

Coming out of high school in 2018, McClung held 30 scholarship offers from across the country. He was at one time committed to play for Rutgers before decommitting and eventually signing with the Hoyas.
