Game Preview: Warriors vs. Grizzlies – 12/9/19

presented by

BACK ON WARRIORS GROUND
The Warriors return home from their longest road trip of the season looking to do something they haven’t achieved all season: win consecutive games. They’ll look to do that on Monday when they host the Grizzlies in the second of three head-to-head meetings between the two clubs this season. The Warriors beat the Grizzlies, 114-95, in Memphis on Nov. 19 behind big games from Alec Burks, Glenn Robinson III and Draymond Green, all three of whom played key roles in the Dubs’ Friday night win in Chicago.

Monday will mark the first Warriors home game in nearly two weeks, and the game falls on Jewish Heritage Night at Chase Center. As part of the festivities, ALL fans will be invited to attend a pregame tailgate on the West plaza, weather permitting, featuring Jewish music, Kosher food, arts & crafts and a photo op with a large menorah.

LAST TIME OUT
A late alley-oop from Draymond Green to Glenn Robinson III proved to be the difference as the Dubs claimed their fifth victory of the season with Friday’s 100-98 win in Chicago. Full Recap

TIMING IS EVERYTHING
Draymond Green’s impact on the game stretches far beyond the box score, and Friday’s game was a prime example of that. He didn’t lead the team in scoring, rebounding or assists, he was a minus-five in his 30 minutes of game action, but that doesn’t even begin to tell the story of how much he contributed to the team’s only win of their season-long five-game road trip. Over the final six-and-a-half minutes of the game he scored to tie the game and twice put the Dubs in front, and he also tallied a steal, three rebounds, a block and two assists, including the lob to Glenn Robinson III in what proved to be the game-winning shot. What those stats don’t measure is how Chicago struggled offensively with Green on the floor. When the three-time NBA champion checked back into the game with nine-and-a-half minutes left, Chicago scored just nine points while shooting 3-for-13 from the floor and issuing four turnovers through the remainder of the game. Green might not have the firepower around him that he’s had for the previous five seasons, but he showed on Friday how experience and toughness can benefit a young and developing team.

MEMPHIS SCOUTING REPORT
The Grizzlies head into Chase Center for the third stop of a four-game road trip. Going into their Saturday night matchup in Utah, Memphis had lost eight of their last nine games. And one of the big stories surrounding the club is the status of rookie sensation Ja Morant. The league-leader in scoring among first-year players with 18.6 points per game, Morant has been sidelined for the last three games – heading into Saturday – and remains “week to week” with back soreness. If Morant is unable to play, it’s a big miss for Memphis, but the Grizzlies are a team deep in scorers. Six players average double figures in scoring, including center Jonas Valanciunas, who had 32 points and 13 rebounds in a close loss to the Bulls on Wednesday. Not only do the Grizzlies share the wealth when it comes to scoring, but they do the same with assists, as they’re tied for third in the league in that category despite the leader of the club, Morant, averaging less than 6.5 helpers. Like the Warriors, the Grizzlies have struggled to pile up the wins this season, but they are a team deep with young talent.
