College basketball’s postseason was cut short by a wave of conference tournament cancellations and the cancellation of the NCAA Tournament. But the coaching carousel is still spinning. In fact, it took a fascinating turn on Saturday, when Iona announced Rick Pitino as its next coach.
The carousel started up again Monday when Samford announced that Scott Padgett will not return. Padgett led Samford to its first 20-win season in over a decade in 2016-17, which was his third season at the helm of the SoCon school. But after Padgett failed to maintain that success the past three seasons, the Bulldogs are moving on.
Samford struggled to a 10-23 (4-14 SoCon) record this season to bring Padgett’s six-year record to 84-115. Among the the rumored replacements for Padgett at university in Birmingham, Alabama is Bucky McMillan, the coach at nearby Mountain Brook High School.
McMillan led Mountain Brook to five state titles in seven-season span from 2013 to 2019. The former Birmingham-Southern guard is a “leading candidate” for the job, according to a Monday report from Jon Rothstein.
