Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga returned to the court Tuesday night after a month-long absence, scoring 20 points with five rebounds and two assists in 21 minutes during a 145-127 loss to the Toronto Raptors. The 23-year-old had not played since logging 10 minutes in a December 18 defeat to the Phoenix Suns.
Kuminga’s performance came amid ongoing tension between the player and the organization regarding his role and future. Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy addressed Kuminga’s recent trade request before the game with pointed comments about market demand.
“As far as the demand, I’m aware of that,” Dunleavy said. “In terms of demands, when there’s a demand, there needs to be a demand on the market. So we’ll see how that unfolds.”
The opportunity emerged following Jimmy Butler’s injury, which will sideline him for months. Steve Kerr praised Kuminga’s readiness after the extended absence from the rotation.
“It was great,” Kerr said. “He came in and had great energy, attacked the rim, made some shots. I thought JK was really good and it’s a great sign. With Jimmy out, obviously there’s a hole at that spot on our roster.”
Kuminga’s agent, Aaron Turner, responded to Dunleavy’s comments following his client’s performance. The exchange highlighted the strained relationship between the player and franchise as trade deadline approaches on February 5.
Draymond Green commended Kuminga for maintaining professionalism during his time away from the lineup.
“I think we’ve all been very vocal about how he’s handled himself,” Green said. “He’s been incredible. And that is proven by the game he had. If you’ve been a nuisance, if you will, that game doesn’t happen for you.”
Kuminga declined to speak with reporters after the game. Dunleavy acknowledged he wished the situation had “worked out better” but emphasized the organization must prioritize team interests. He previously stated he’s “willing to work with” players seeking new situations while maintaining Golden State’s position from contract negotiations last summer.
Butler’s extended absence provides Kuminga consistent opportunities to showcase his abilities. The challenge has never been his talent but rather delivering consistent performances. Golden State begins a four-game road trip Thursday at the Dallas Mavericks.
Dunleavy indicated he wants to evaluate the next several weeks before making significant roster decisions. For Kuminga to facilitate a trade if he remains committed to leaving, continued strong performances like Tuesday’s become essential.
