Cape Town – Temba Bavuma believes it will be difficult to fill the vacant role left by former Proteas star batsman Hashim Amla.

Amla retired from international cricket earlier this month, bringing the curtain down on one of the greatest Proteas careers ever seen.

“It is difficult for any team in the world to fill the void left behind by Amla’s retirement,” Bavuma told The Hindu website.

“It is up to guys like me who have been playing Test cricket regularly for the last two years to step in and try to make it count.”

The Proteas will tour India next month for three T20Is and then three Tests from September 15-October 23.

South Africa ‘A’ are set to play five unofficial one-day matches followed by two four-day games.

Bavuma will captain the SA ‘A’ side in the shorter format with the first unofficial ODI starting on Thursday in Thiruvananthapuram at 05:30 SA time.

The 29-year-old sees the ‘A’ tour as an excellent opportunity to acclimatise to sub-continental conditions.

“We want to get more game-time in conditions we are not used to…” said Bavuma.

“As a batter you are always greedy and would want more runs and centuries against your name. I am enjoying my journey as a Test cricketer and am always trying to improve.”
