San Jose 2019: Monday’s Order of Play and Match Points

MATCH POINTS

Defending champion Mihaela Buzarnescu faces former Top 10 player Daria Kasatkina for their first-ever meeting, in a Monday nightcap. Buzarnescu claimed her first WTA singles title in San Jose last year, which allowed her to make a Top 20 debut not long after the event.

Maria Sakkari, who lost to Buzarnescu in last year’s final, takes a 2-0 head-to-head lead into her match against Ekaterina Alexandrova. Both of Sakkari’s victories came at clay-court Challenger events, in 2015 and 2016.

CoCo Vandeweghe will face Marie Bouzkova for the first time, in Vandeweghe’s first match since a first-round loss to Polona Hercog at Beijing in October of last year. Vandeweghe was runner-up at this event in 2017, falling to compatriot Madison Keys in the final.

Carla Suarez Navarro will take on Magda Linette in their first encounter. Former World No.6 Suarez Navarro is looking for her first career match-win at this event, losing in her opening matches in both 2014 and 2015.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Peng Shuai, two former WTA Doubles World No.1 players, will team up for a first-round doubles match on Monday. Mattek-Sands is also a wild card into the singles event where she is the second-oldest competitor; she will face the oldest competitor, fellow American Venus Williams, in the first round later in the week.
