Pelicans shootaround update presented by HUB International: Zion Williamson back on court shooting

One Twitter user eloquently described it as “a sight for sore eyes.” New Orleans point guard Lonzo Ball called it “really encouraging.”

Although the focus during Tuesday’s morning shootaround was on preparing to host the Brooklyn Nets (7 p.m., Fox Sports New Orleans, ESPN Radio 100.3 FM), afterward many eyes were on Zion Williamson, who shot standstill jumpers and took instruction from coaches on some of the team’s offensive plays. It was the No. 1 draft pick’s first time on the court in view of local media at the Ochsner Sports Performance Center.

“This was his first time getting on the court,” Ball said. “So it was good to see.”

“It was good,” forward Kenrich Williams said. “He got in with us today and passed to us (before shootaround). It was good to see his face.” Williamson last played in an Oct. 13 preseason game at San Antonio, prior to undergoing knee surgery.

Other notes from Tuesday’s shootaround:

JJ Redick has been ruled out vs. Brooklyn due to left groin soreness. Redick’s DNP virtually guarantees that New Orleans will use a 15th different starting lineup in 2019-20; only one Pelicans first unit this season that included Derrick Favors did not include Redick – and that Nov. 16 group at Miami featured Frank Jackson and E’Twaun Moore, who have not played much recently. A lineup of Ball, Jrue Holiday, Brandon Ingram, Williams and Favors has not been used this season, partly because Ball and Favors experienced overlapping injury stretches. …

The Nets have fared well without Kyrie Irving in recent weeks, partly because fill-in starting point guard Spencer Dinwiddie has been so good, scoring 24-plus points in seven of his last eight games.

“He’s always been a great player,” Ball said of the fellow Southern California native. “Whether he comes off the bench or whether he starts, he can get hot at any time. He’s a big guard, so I can relate to him.” …

Ball on some of New Orleans’ objectives against Brooklyn, which features six players who are averaging at least 1.4 made three-pointers per game (though Irving and Caris LeVert are sidelined by injury): “Stop the penetration, rebound the ball and get out on the fast break, try to generate more scoring options for ourselves. And limit their three-point attempts as well.”
