Fiona Ferro claimed her first WTA singles title last week, defeating her compatriot Alizé Cornet for the Ladies Open Lausanne title on Sunday. Ferro jolted her ranking up to a career-high spot of World No.75 following her title.

Ferro is currently on a six-match winning streak, having beaten No.7 seed Sara Sorribes Tormo in the first round of Palermo on Tuesday. She will now face wild card Giulia Gatto-Monticone; Ferro has won their only prior meeting, in the semifinals of a Challenger event in Olomouc, Czech Republic, last year.

Cornet was seeking her seventh career title but fell to 6-7 in her 13 WTA singles finals. She returned to her winning ways by outlasting Martina Trevisan in the first round this week, having defeated the Italian in the same round last week at Lausanne as well. Their Palermo match finished at nearly 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Cornet will now face Anna-Lena Friedsam for the first time.

Lucky loser Liudmila Samsonova has defeated No.4 seed Tamara Zidansek in their only completed match. The Russian ousted Zidansek in three sets in Doha qualifying earlier this year. Samsonova also advanced past Zidansek via walkover at a Challenger event in Padova, Italy last season.

Jil Teichmann will face Gabriela Ce for the first time. 8th-seeded Teichmann won her first WTA singles title at Prague earlier this year, defeating Karolina Muchova in the final.
