Numbers: Patrick van Aanholt joins Thierry Henry in rare Fergie Time feat

Another topsy-turvy weekend of European football, and another weekend of scarcely believable numbers. Some results were expected. Some, not so much.

Premier League

1

Crystal Palace have beaten Manchester United in the Premier League for the first time in the competition’s history. In fact, before Jordan Ayew and Patrick van Aanholt got their goals, the last time Palace even took the lead against United in league competition at Old Trafford was in 1979, when David Swindlehurst scored in an eventual 1-1 draw.

2

The ‘Fergie time’ myth drew its power from the sheer number of 90-plus minute goals Manchester United used to score. They aren’t used to conceding in stoppage time, though. With his winner, van Aanholt became only the second ever player to score a 90th minute winner against United in the PL, after Thierry Henry with Arsenal in January 2007. Van Aanholt is the first to do so in a match at Old Trafford.

1/25

Aston Villa’s manager Dean Smith has registered his first win over a Premier League opponent. He had failed to win in 25 previous meetings with Premier League opposition in his career as a player and manager before tonight. The game also marked the end of Jack Grealish’s  20-match PL losing streak.

9

Manchester City have won all nine of their top-flight games against Bournemouth, the best 100%-win record by a team over an opponent in top-flight history

12

Liverpool have won 12 consecutive PL games, their best-ever winning streak in the competition. This has also equalled their longest winning run in league competition (12 between April-October 1990 under Kenny Dalglish).

Oh and their unbeaten run at home continues. Their 42-game home unbeaten streak in the PL (32-10-0) is the second longest such streak in PL history behind only Chelsea (86) who did not lose a single league match at Stamford Bridge between 2004 and 2008.

13

How underrated is Ashley Barnes? Only Sergio Agüero (16) and Sadio Mané (15) have scored more Premier League goals than the Englishman (13) in 2019.

27

Sergio Aguero and David Silva have now combined for 27 goals in the Premier League – the only duos to combine for more are Thierry Henry and Robert Pires (29), and Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard (36).

50

It had to happen sometime. This weekend, Nicolas Pepe became the first player to successfully dribble past Virgil van Dijk in the Dutch defender’s last 50 appearances in the Premier League, since Mikel Merino in March 2018 for Newcastle.

50

Kevin De Bruyne has now made 50 assists in the Premier League, achieving this milestone in the fewest appearances of any player in the competition’s history (123). The next fastest were Mesut Ozil in 141 and Eric Cantona in 143.

79.8%

Tottenham had 79.8% of the possession in their 0-1 defeat to Newcastle, the second highest figure for a losing side in the Premier League since 2003-04, behind only Liverpool’s 80.4% against Burnley in August 2016.

400

Sergio Agüero has now scored 400 goals for club and country combined, with 235 of those coming for Manchester City.

150

West Ham are the first club to have had as many as 150 different goal scorers in the Premier League, following Sebastian Haller’s first goal for the club.

La Liga

1

No Messi, no problem. New boy Antoine Griezmann is the first Barcelona player to score a brace on league debut at Camp Nou in this century. Interestingly, the Frenchman had never scored a goal at Camp Nou in his 14 games as an opposition player.

2

Anssumane Fati has become the second youngest player to play for FC Barcelona in La Liga history (16 years and 298 days), after Vicenç Martínez played against Real Madrid in October 1941 at 16 years, 280 days. Fati is the first player born in the 21st century to represent the club.

Bundesliga

2

Robert Lewandowski is the first Bundesliga player since Roy Makaay in 2005 to score a brace (at least) on each of the first two matchdays of a season.

19

Jadon Sancho, at 19 years and 151 days, is the youngest player in Bundesliga history to score 15 league goals, beating Horst Köppel’s record from 1967 by 34 days.
