All but two NFL teams took the field over the weekend for Week 2 of the 2019 preseason, but the final two are closing it out on Monday night, with Jimmy Garoppolo making his long-anticipated return under the lights of prime time.

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback had not played in a game since Week 3 of the 2018 regular season, when he suffered a season-ending ACL tear, but he’s got high hopes as the leader of Kyle Shanahan’s Niners squad. San Fran topped the Dallas Cowboys in their exhibition opener, but that was without Garoppolo, who finally got some snaps under his belt against Vic Fangio’s talented Denver Broncos defense ahead of a critical year in the NFC West — and struggled.

Denver has its own QB intrigue, with former Super Bowl champion Joe Flacco atop the depth chart but second-round rookie Drew Lock getting plenty of preseason time under center. The Broncos’ “D,” however, remains the staple of a team eyeing a surprise return to the postseason, with Pro Bowlers like Von Miller and Chris Harris headlining the lineup.

Raheem Mostert, Deebo Samuel flash for Niners

The 49ers didn’t get much out of their starting quarterback against Denver, but they got a whole lot from Mostert in a crowded backfield headlined by Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida. With Jerick McKinnon still sidelined, the former undrafted reserve seized the spotlight for San Francisco’s offense in the second half of Monday night’s game, ripping off a 30-yard touchdown run to pile up 100 yards from scrimmage on his first eight touches, including a 38-yard catch-and-run. Not only did Mostert’s score put the Niners up 10-9 in the third quarter, but more importantly, it probably solidified a decent role for the former Purdue product.

Mostert spent time with six other teams over the first two seasons of his NFL career, latching on to the Niners’ roster in 2016. A repeat preseason star who flashed serious potential on the 53-man team a year ago before suffering a broken arm, he could wind up splitting snaps with Breida and McKinnon as the third-down back behind Coleman.

Mostert wasn’t the only Niner to show off his speed, either. Second-round rookie Deebo Samuel, who could play an even bigger role in San Fran’s offense as one of Jimmy Garoppolo’s most explosive pass targets, made like Emmanuel Sanders on an end-around in the third quarter — and then one-upped the big-name Bronco by toeing the sideline for a blazing 45-yard scamper toward the end zone. Denver managed to shove Samuel out of bounds before his outstretched hands hit the pylon, but not before the first-year wideout flashed 20-mph acceleration and set up a Jeff Wilson touchdown run.

Broncos avoid major injury scares with Lock, Fant

Denver held its collective breath on two separate occasions Monday night, as both second-round pick Drew Lock and first-round tight end Noah Fant were evaluated for injuries through the first three-quarters of action. Lock’s throwing hand was hit on a third-quarter throw that prompted Kevin Hogan to come on in relief, while Fant left the game after suffering a lower-body injury after a reception in the first half. Reports have since indicated that Lock was scheduled to play into the fourth quarter but remained out despite negative X-rays on his hand, while Fant’s injury was to his ankle and was reportedly not serious. For now, it appears the Broncos have avoided injury scares to both of their first two selections in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Joe Flacco, Emmanuel Sanders shine early vs. 49ers

Jimmy Garoppolo may have drawn all eyes coming into Monday night’s game, but Joe Flacco was far and away the superior quarterback, flashing a live arm against the 49ers defense and touting a strong connection with Emmanuel Sanders before being relieved by rookie Drew Lock in the second quarter. Flacco’s numbers (7-11, 59 yards) were far from gaudy, but he wasted no time showing off some zip on his passes, including on a 45-yard deep ball to Sanders that would’ve put the Broncos in the red zone if not for a holding penalty that negated the play. Flacco also nearly connected on another first down to Sanders a few plays earlier but the completed catch was ruled out of bounds. The veteran quarterback is already playing with confidence in a new offensive system that draws from familiar concepts from Flacco’s past.

Sanders, meanwhile, looked spry as ever just eight and a half months removed from tearing his Achilles, an injury that apparently ends almost 30 percent of its victims’ careers and usually requires something like an 11-month recovery. Like Flacco, his stat line (1 rush, 19 yards; 1 catch, 5 yards) was hardly indicative of how game-ready he looked, surely instilling some confidence in Broncos fans that Vic Fangio’s offense won’t be lacking for some big plays in 2019.

Jimmy Garoppolo antsy in first action since injury

For all intents and purposes, Monday night was all about Garoppolo getting back on the field. But if his first two drives were any indication, well, the $137 million man is going to need some time before he returns to late-2017 form. The veteran signal-caller looked antsy out of the gate vs. Vic Fangio’s defense, throwing an interception to Broncos rookie Isaac Yiadom Jr. on his second pass and then nearly throwing another INT on his second series — a near-pick-six by former Eagles corner De’Vante Bausby. Denver edge rusher Bradley Chubb and interior man Shelby Harris helped force the first turnover, rushing Garoppolo right up the middle, but the QB’s 0-for-5 start carried into his ensuing drives.

On the plus side of the Niners’ early efforts, Tevin Coleman showed off some burst in his first couple of carries against Denver, leading the way in a backfield also featuring Matt Breida.
