Tyrone Green won’t be lost to the Springboks

Former SA under-20 winger Tyrone Green may be lost to the Lions for the foreseeable future, but he won’t be lost to the Springboks.

Green confirmed that while he used the 21-day clause to release himself from his contract with the Lions that would have ended in October, he certainly wasn’t contemplating playing for England.

Green joined Harlequins last week and will continue his career in London, but believes it will make him a better player and allow him to challenge for a Springbok place in future.

“The decision didn’t come in the 21-day period, I have been thinking about it for a long time. It just rushed things a bit. I had to make a decision which I felt was the best for my career,” Green said.

“I believe by going overseas, I can get my rugby to a higher level. Harlequins are a top club and playing in the Premiership will give me the technical and tactical skills I need to become a success. It’s definitely something that will help my career.”

Green said the fact that Rassie Erasmus and new Bok coach Jacques Nienaber have indicated they will choose players who continue their career overseas was a massive factor in the decision. And while competition at wing is massive with the likes of Cheslin Kolbe, Makazole Mapimpi and S’bu Nkosi, to name a few, Green backs himself to succeed.

“I think my rugby can only get better in the Premiership. I don’t have an issue with the competition. I need to reach my own potential. That isn’t the reason why I’m going overseas. I’ve made it thus far without that being an issue and I know Rassie and Jacques are happy to choose players from abroad. It may make it a little bit more difficult, but it is in my hands.

“If I play to my potential and show what I can do, I’ll make it. My performances will count the most.”

Green said even if England come knocking, his dream is to still be a Springbok.

“My future is definitely still at the Springboks. I want to wear the Green and Gold. My move was a career one, and my future is with the Boks.”
