This follows a recent report that four South African franchises could be included in an expanded PRO16.

The Cheetahs and Southern Kings are currently South Africa’s two entrants, but rumours have surfaced that the country’s four Super Rugby franchises – the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers – would be the preferred candidates.

Afrikaans newspaper Rapport indicated overt the weekend hat SA Rugby was also looking to reduce the number of franchises currently involved in tournaments from six to four.

This could have dire consequences for the Cheetahs and Smith hopes a viable solution could be found.

“The Cheetahs have been an integral part of South African rugby for a long time,” Smith told OFM Sport.

“They have been moved out of competitions before and unfortunately this time it doesn’t look good.”

Smith, who coached the Cheetahs to two Currie Cup title, said it would be “sad day” if the Cheetahs were to lose their franchise status.

“The reasons for why the Cheetahs are important to South African rugby has never changed. It’s a natural talent hotbed, that gives players a chance, who usually don’t get a chance at other franchises.

“It is also very important for the central part of South African rugby supporters, and also the growth of the game amongst the youth.

“I sincerely hope that there is a way to find a solution and make sure that all of the franchises, including the Cheetahs, are looked after well.”

Smith, 48, coached the Cheetahs between 2015 and 2019 before getting the Italian top job.
