AB de Villiers will not play in the Big Bash League in Australia this year.

The South African batsman, who turned out for Brisbane Heat last year, has opted to take a break from cricket due to the birth of his third child, reports Cricinfo

De Villiers played six matches for the Heat last year, scoring a total of 146 runs at an average of 24.33 and a strike rate of 140.38.

His highest score was 71, the only time he passed 50 during the competition.

“While things initially looked fine for him to come back, there have been a few factors emerged which have changed everyone’s plans,” said Darren Lehmann, coach of the Heat.

“The main one, aside from the challenges represented by Covid-19 and international travel, is that AB and his wife Danielle are expecting their third child very soon,” he added.

De Villiers confirmed that the decision to miss this year’s Big Bash was a reluctant one.

“It’s exciting for Danielle and me with the arrival of our new baby very soon,” he said.

“So with a young, growing family, and the uncertainty around travel and conditions due to Covid-19, we reluctantly decided it wasn’t going to be this season,”
