Man United target Varane considering Real Madrid future – sources

Craig Burley breaks down the latest transfer rumours, headlined by a potential swap of Man United’s Paul Pogba and Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale.
Karim Benzema crushed any hopes of an upset win for Huesca with his curler in the 89th minute, to seal Real Madrid’s victory at Santiago Bernabéu.
Zinedine Zidane claims Manchester United’s Paul Pogba would want to play for Real Madrid at some point in his career.

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane is considering his future with the club, sources have told ESPN FC.

Varane has been linked with moves to Manchester United and Bayern Munich, but it is understood the World Cup winner is first weighing up whether he wants to stay at Madrid before deciding on his next destination.

ESPN FC understands that rather than looking to improve his contract, as has previously been reported, Varane wants to decide what is best for his career long-term having won every trophy available at Madrid.

The France international has a strong bond with manager Zinedine Zidane, who was instrumental in bringing him to the Spanish capital from Lens 2011, and his relationship with Madrid teammates remains positive despite such a difficult campaign.

Varane did not play in the 3-2 win over bottom club Huesca on Sunday, but is expected to return to the starting lineup for Wednesday’s trip to Valencia.

“[Varane] has said nothing to me [about leaving] and I want him to stay,” Zidane said on Tuesday. “Things can happen in life, but he looks good to me.

“The most important thing is what he says to me, and he is at the best club in the world. He has won a lot here.”

Varane’s trophy haul with Madrid includes two La Liga titles and four Champions League wins, with the defender starting each final.

However, Zidane’s return could signal a summer overhaul with significant incomings and outgoings expected.

Defender Eder Militao has already been signed from Porto for €50 million.
