During an appearance on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight podcast with Buster Olney, basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley revealed that one of the more notable names to call him during his coronavirus scare was Angels outfielder Mike Trout. But Trout’s call didn’t only have Barkley’s health in mind, Trout seemed to have at least an equal amount of concern for himself too.

Barkley had spoken to the Angels just 10 days earlier, with Trout presumably in attendance. When news broke that the TNT host might have the respiratory disease, Trout apparently called Barkley repeatedly to ask about updates on his COVID-19 test. The situation is laughable now that Barkley ultimately tested negative, but Trout’s concern was strong.

“I felt bad for him,” Barkley said. “I started feeling better a day later, but I was so upset. Mike was quarantined waiting on my results. I can laugh about it now, but he was calling me every other day to check on my results so he could feel like he didn’t have the coronavirus.”

As a result, the first person Barkley called after the negative test came in was Trout. The second was Knicks legend and current Georgetown coach Patrick Ewing. Once again, it was because of the contact Barkley had with people before speaking to a team. Ewing called on the Round Mound of Rebound to give a speech to the Georgetown men’s basketball team before the ultimately-canceled Big East tournament in New York — Barkley was in town to do Stephen Colbert’s talk show. Just like Trout, Ewing made the whole situation a lot funnier because he was calling Barkley daily to check on the results.

“I laugh now because they didn’t give a shit about me not having the virus, they worried about them or their players didn’t have it,” Barkley said.
