Five things to know about the Pelicans on Oct. 23, 2019

1)      New Orleans (0-1) dropped a hard-fought opener in overtime, falling 130-122 at Toronto, after watching the Raptors pick up their 2019 NBA championship rings during a pregame ceremony. Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet tallied 34 points apiece for Toronto, while Brandon Ingram notched 22 points to lead New Orleans.

3)      Earlier in the day, David Griffin gave an update on Zion Williamson’s successful surgery and status going forward. The rookie has a timetable of 6-8 weeks to return.

4)      On Western Conference Wednesday, the Clippers were the first team to break through for a win last night, beating the Lakers. There are 10 West teams that will play their first games tonight, including intraconference matchups of Oklahoma City-Utah, Sacramento-Phoenix and Denver-Portland. Houston and Golden State tip off their seasons Thursday in separate games, both on TNT.

5)      The Pelicans will practice Wednesday in Toronto, before returning to Louisiana this afternoon. Next on the schedule is a Friday home opener vs. Dallas (7 p.m., ESPN, Fox Sports New Orleans). That is followed by a Saturday back-to-back in Houston.
