Ferrer, Querrey Square Off In Miami Opener; View Thursday Schedule

Sixteen years ago, Spaniard David Ferrer made his debut at the Miami Open presented by Itau. On Thursday night at the ATP Masters 1000 tennis tournament, the 36-year-old Spaniard will begin his final tournament appearance against American Sam Querrey in the night session. Ferrer has a 32-16 tournament record, highlighted by a runner-up finish to Andy Murray in 2013.

There are a whopping 26 first-round singles matches on Thursday’s schedule, following a rain-hit start to the ATP Masters 1000 tournament at the Hard Rock Stadium. Four Americans aged 23 and under — Taylor Fritz (21), Reilly Opelka (21), Christopher Eubanks (22) and Mackenzie McDonald (23) — are in action.

Wild card Eubanks, a former All-American at Georgia Tech University, takes on Damir Dzumhur for the first time in the opening men’s match on Stadium court. Fritz, who reached a career-high No. 40 in the ATP Rankings on 28 January, plays German Maximilian Marterer in the third match on Court 1, while last month’s New York Open titlist Opelka meets German Jan-Lennard Struff in the fifth match on Court 1. World No. 60 McDonald, a former NCAA singles and doubles champion at UCLA, plays #NextGenATP Frenchman Ugo Humbert in the last match on Court 8. Last month, McDonald beat World No. 4 Juan Martin del Potro en route to his first ATP Tour semi-final in Delray Beach.

Other highlights on Thursday include #NextGenATP qualifiers Felix Auger-Aliassime,18, of Canada and Casper Ruud, 20, of Norway facing off in the third match on Court 2. Both are in this week’s Top 8 ATP Race to Milan standings for the Next Gen ATP Finals in November. Elsewhere, in the final match on Court 6, big-serving Ivo Karlovic, who turned 40 on 28 February, meets Spaniard Pablo Andujar. Karlovic is the first 40-year-old in the Miami Open singles draw since Jimmy Connors in 1993.
