College basketball coaching changes: Tracking the 57 coaching swaps that happened in 2019

A mid-May coaching hire is highly unusual in college basketball but it became necessary this year once John Beilein left his decades-long career in college to take on the Cleveland Cavaliers’ opportunity in the NBA.

And with Beilein leaving, that opened up a top-20 gig in college basketball. Between Michigan and UCLA, it wound up being a pretty notable spring of change in college hoops. There were other big jobs that swapped — Alabama, Arkansas, Cincinnati, St. John’s and UNLV, among others — but Michigan becoming vacant presented an interesting circumstance for one of the four proudest programs in the Big Ten.

As you know now, UM alum Juwan Howard was chosen to guide the Wolverines. Howard left his NBA assistant gig with the Miami Heat to take on college, returning to the game for the first time since he wore a Michigan uniform. Obviously, this meant a lot to him. We all saw just how much when he got emotional before even saying a word at his introductory press conference.

Howard’s hiring was the antepenultimate change among head-coaching decisions, believe it or not. Two more schools — North Dakota and Northern Arizona — made moves even after the Howard addition. For NAU, Jack Murphy left his head spot to be an assistant at Arizona. That was a surprise. North Dakota took longer than any school this offseason to make its hiring of a head coach official: Paul Sather will step in there.

If you’re wondering which coaches left and who was hired to replace them, this is your primer for all 57 jobs that had changeover in 2019.
