Cam Newton works out with Odell Beckham Jr. as former Panthers QB remains unsigned

Watch Now: We Need to Talk: Matt Rhule on coaching the Panthers during a pandemic (3:37)

Cam Newton is still a quarterback without a home as the former league MVP remains a free agent following his release from the Carolina Panthers earlier this offseason, but that’s not stopping him from getting in some work with elite NFL talent. Newton posted a video to his social media channels on Saturday of him working out with Browns receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and going through drills.

The 31-year-old looked pretty smooth in the clips that were released, dropping back with ease and hitting Beckham in stride. Of course, Newton missed the bulk of the 2019 season with a Lisfranc fracture that found him on injured reserve in early November. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic limiting face-to-face interaction this offseason, Newton hasn’t been able to get in front of organizations to show that he’s recovered from that injury. That is likely one of the key reasons why he still remains unsigned.

On social media, Newton captioned the video saying, “Don’t get it twisted. I’m crafting every day.”

Could Newton’s next stop be to join Beckham in Cleveland? That would appear unlikely. The Browns already have Baker Mayfield solidified as the face of the franchise at the quarterback spot and just gave a three-year, $18 million deal to Case Keenum, who head coach Kevin Stefanski worked with in Minnesota, earlier this offseason to back up Mayfield. Given those factors, it would be tough for Newton to carve out any sort of role with the Browns.

That said, the New England Patriots, who just saw Tom Brady leave the franchise earlier this offseason, have reportedly touched base with Newton at least once this offseason. That has been looked at as a possible fit, as Bill Belichick looks to begin the post-Brady era and Newton searches for the best opportunity to start again in the NFL.

As the nation begins to lighten the social distancing restrictions due to the pandemic, Newton should have a greater opportunity to meet with clubs and show that not only is he fully recovered from injury, but is capable to once again be the leading man under center.
